WordPress backups should be performed on a routine basis and maintained separately from the server. In many cases, your hosting provider provides a backup solution for you, but you’ll want to ensure that you verify that the backups are taking place. If you’re implementing a Web Application Firewall (e.g. Sucuri) or other add-on security solutions, you may have the ability to perform backups there as well.
Tip: You should backup both the WordPress software files AND the WordPress Database files. If you fail to backup the database, all your files will restore, but none of your web content will be stored.
If you don’t have access to the above, there are a number of modules such as “All in One WP Security” that include backup as part of their larger product. There are hundreds of solutions that exist for backing up WordPress. For most organizations opting to use the module approach, plugins such as BackUpWordPress module will allow for scheduled backups to services such as DropBox, Amazon S3, Azure, and more.
Example Backup Plugins:
-
BackUpWordPress
-
All in One WP Security
-
BackWPup Free
-
VaultPress
Always remember: You must always verify and test your backups. A backup that is not verified and tested cannot be relied upon when you need it.
